What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?
To stay moist and comfortable, your eyes produce tears constantly at a steady rate. Symptoms of dry eye syndrome can include a scratchy, stinging sensation, stringy mucus, blurry vision, or excessive tearing. The tear glands are producing too much and overwhelming the drainage system. The water in your tears is evaporating faster than normal and you don’t have enough of a lipid layer of oil on the surface. The oil-producing glands in your eyelids are not working properly which is causing Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD).
Patients with dry eyes often complain of stinging, burning, itching, redness, irritation or discomfort of the eyes. Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) can also result, and is more commonly seen after cataract surgery. With dry eyes, your vision may be blurred, causing eyestrain and difficulty at a computer, watching television, or seeing clearly while driving.
Left untreated, severe dry eyes may lead to inflammation/ulceration of the cornea, MGD, or other serious ocular complications. Honestly, MGD and dry eye disorders can get worse if they are left untreated overtime. What’s happening is that changes are occurring in the glands and underlying structure of your eyes. Call us for help. Don’t wait.

Recommended Fixes: LipiFlow or Intense Pulsed Light
LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation technology from Tear Science can also help your dry eye condition. Lipiflow applies heat to the inner eyelids and gentle pressure, releasing lipids from the Meibomian glands. The procedure is fast, virtually painless, and takes place right in my office.
In the past, this condition has often gone unrecognized and undiagnosed. Patients may have been advised to “home-treat” their uncomfortable symptoms with measures such as artificial tears, warm compresses, lid scrubs, or medicated drops. All of these remedies treat symptoms but cannot cure the underlying problem. Only recently has a treatment known as the Toyos Optimum Dry Eye Treatment, which uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, become available to target the cause of Dry Eye, and to reduce or eliminate symptoms. IPL has helped many patients with Dry Eye to reduce their discomfort and improve their quality of life
