LASIK is actually the abbreviation for "Laser-Assisted In Situ keratomileusis." Yes, it’s a mouthful but rest assured, this procedure is the most common laser eye surgery used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Laser eye surgery is almost always pain-free and surgery itself is so fast that it will be over within 15 minutes. That’s for both eyes! The very best news: You will be able to see improved vision without glasses or contact lenses within a day.

LASIK falls into the category of refractive surgery. It corrects vision by reshaping the cornea of the eye allowing light to enter and be properly focused onto the retina.

Why Choose Laser Surgery?
Yes, LASIK surgery has a high success rate, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t point out all aspects of the procedure before you choose this surgery.
Laser eye surgery offers numerous benefits and can dramatically improve your quality of life. Most people achieve 20/20 vision or even better afterward. But LASIK results can vary and some patients end up with only 20/40 vision or less.
You may still need to wear glasses or contact lenses following laser surgery, but keep in mind that your prescription level will be much lower than before.
Years of results show how completely safe LASIK surgery is but occasionally complications do occur. Infection can result and there have been cases of what is known as night glare afterward. In night glare, patients see starbursts or halos while looking at lights at night, especially while driving.
In rare cases, a LASIK enhancement, or "touch up" procedure, a few months after the primary LASIK surgery is needed to get the best results.
And, you also may still need reading glasses after age 40, caused by normal age-related loss of near vision called presbyopia.
What Happens in Surgery?
First, eye surgeons like myself use either a microkeratome, a mechanical surgical tool, or a femtosecond laser to make a thin, round "flap" in your cornea.
Then, I fold back this round, hinged flap to get to the cornea beneath. This is called the stroma. At this point working on the stroma level, I take out some the excess corneal tissue using an excimer laser.
An excimer relies on a cool ultraviolet light to remove, or what is known surgically as "ablate," tiny pieces of tissue from the cornea reshaping it so light can focus better on the retina. This will improve your vision.
If you are nearsighted, my goal for surgery will be to flatten out the cornea. In the case of farsightedness, the opposite is true and I’ll create a steeper cornea.
There is a common but false misconception that laser surgery can’t help anyone with astigmatism. In fact, using the same special excimer laser, I can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregularly shaped cornea into a more normal shape.
